The name comes from the Sanskrit word (dhanur) which means "bow" and means "posture" or "seat".
A similar pose called "face-down seat" is described in the first century Sritvanidhi. In the 1995 Yogasopan Purvakatuska, the pose is described in half a tone, and the name Dhanurasana is given in reference to the description of the Gheranda Samhita.
It is unclear whether this seat is medieval, although the name has been used to indicate that the seatbelt will be an arched bow instead of a backband. The description of the bow in the 1st century Hatha Yoga Pradipika is ambiguous as to whether the pose is sitting or not.
One should pull [the ear] up to the ear as both feet hold the big toes of both feet. This is called a bow pose. (HYP 1.25)
